I started working with my tutor in 2023 during a very tough time in my life—I had just lost my daughter and was taking care of my three grandchildren. Even though it was challenging, I was determined to set a good example for my grandkids and create better opportunities for us. My goal was to get my GED, so I made sure to attend every tutoring session and complete all my homework.

DenisseChicago

I joined ALPS in 2015, starting with computer classes and quickly moving into one-on-one tutoring. Over the years, I’ve focused on various literacy goals, including reading comprehension, math, writing, and workforce development. In FY18, I made significant progress: my reading score improved by a grade level, and my math scores went up by 1.7 grade levels. I also participated in the ALPS Writers' Workshop, where my essay was published in a booklet, and I helped design the cover and spoke at public events.
