Empowering Adult Learners Through ALPS

An Interview with Jeremy Cowart, ALPS Program Coordinator

At the Jane Addams Resource Corporation (JARC), the Adult Learners Programs and Services (ALPS) is making a transformative difference in the lives of adult learners. Through free one-on-one tutoring in reading, writing, math, GED prep, computers, and ESL, ALPS provides adults with the support they need to achieve their educational and career goals.

Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down with Jeremy Cowart, the ALPS Program Coordinator, to discuss the impact of the program, the dedication of its tutors, and the ongoing need for community support.

Jeremy’s journey to becoming the ALPS Coordinator has been anything but conventional. Before joining JARC, he worked as a hairstylist, where he developed a knack for listening, connecting with people from all walks of life, and building trust. Later, he transitioned to teaching, working as a school teacher for several years. These roles gave him a diverse skill set and a deep understanding of the importance of patience, empathy, and empowerment in fostering personal growth. With this unique background, Jeremy brings a fresh perspective to adult education, understanding that learning is a personal journey that requires adaptability and compassion. His approach centers on creating a supportive learning environment, where each individual’s journey is respected and encouraged.

Reflecting on what inspired him to join the ALPS program, Jeremy shared,

Meeting Learners Where They Are

The ALPS program is designed to be flexible, offering both in-person and virtual tutoring sessions to accommodate learners’ diverse schedules and needs. When asked about this aspect, Jeremy emphasized that flexibility is crucial for adult learners, who often juggle work, family, and other responsibilities. By providing both in-person and online options, ALPS ensures that learners can make steady progress toward their goals, regardless of their circumstances.

“Many of our learners come in with unique challenges,” Jeremy explained. “Our tutors are trained to meet them where they are, respecting each individual’s pace and learning style. This approach is what truly makes ALPS effective.” He believes that being adaptable to each learner’s needs not only makes learning more accessible but also fosters a sense of trust and motivation that’s vital for long-term success.

The Transformative Power of Tutoring

One of the most inspiring aspects of ALPS is the impact that a dedicated tutor can have on a learner’s journey. Jeremy shared the story of a learner who, despite facing significant disabilities-related challenges, has steadily advanced toward her GED with the support of her tutor. The tutor’s role went beyond academic guidance; through patience, encouragement, and a focus on goal-setting, they built a relationship that has helped the learner grow in confidence and independence. According to Jeremy, this type of supportive dynamic is what makes tutoring so powerful. “It’s about much more than just learning facts or skills,” he said. “Tutoring in ALPS is about building self-worth and creating opportunities for people to see their potential.” He notes that tutors play a dual role as both educators and mentors, helping learners envision a future where their goals are achievable.

The success of the ALPS program wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of its volunteer tutors. Jeremy emphasized the crucial role that volunteers play, noting that ALPS is constantly seeking compassionate individuals to join their team. When asked why volunteers are so essential to the program, he explained, “Volunteers bring a unique energy and commitment that inspires our learners. They don’t just teach; they show up every week because they believe in our learners’ potential.”

Jeremy shared that ALPS welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds, providing training and support to ensure they are well-prepared. The program’s flexibility also extends to tutors, allowing them to choose times and formats (in-person or virtual) that work best for them. “We don’t require prior teaching experience—what we look for are people who are patient, empathetic, and committed to making a difference,” he added. “The skills we teach them are important, but it’s their heart for helping others that truly makes an impact.”

Looking Ahead: The Future of ALPS

When asked about the future of ALPS, Jeremy expressed a hopeful vision for expanding the program’s reach and impact. He hopes to introduce new initiatives that will further support adult learners, including additional resources for digital literacy and more structured pathways to job training. As the needs of learners evolve, ALPS is committed to adapting and growing alongside them.

“Education is always evolving, and we want to ensure that ALPS remains relevant and responsive to our learners’ needs,” Jeremy said. Looking forward, he envisions even more partnerships with community organizations and a continued focus on equipping learners with both academic skills and practical tools for real-world success.

Jim’s Success Story

Jim has a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and he was working as a social worker for years. He was working in mental health case management, and he got a master’s degree in the same field. However, with time, he realized that maybe this wasn’t the most fulfilling career for him. He found himself constantly under pressure to find the right answer or solution for the problems of other patients, which ended up generating anxiety and depression in him. “I think that I chose that field because I had some sort of question about my own mental health and was looking for answers. Probably I should not have gotten a master’s degree; probably I should have maybe gone and seen a therapist.”

”"Initially, I felt intimidated, lacking experience with tools or machinery. But with one-on-one support from Mike, JARC’s CNC instructor, and guidance from the entire JARC team, I gained the confidence to feel comfortable in this environment."

Like Jim, many of our clients struggle with different barriers that prevent them from developing themselves in a well-balanced environment and lack the resources to overcome their obstacles. Jim was living in a shelter when he found out about JARC. He recalls seeing a printed flyer displaying our welding and CNC programs every time he came out of his classroom. He started feeling that this was a sign, and he was sure that he didn’t want to go back to his previous job as a social worker, so that’s when he started looking into our programs and chose our Computer Numerical Control (CNC) program.

While in the program, Jim received a lot of support from our staff to make him feel confident in his new career path.

He worked on improving his math skills before being able to write codes and run them on the machines. He also got transportation assistance and employment coaching to help him prepare for his interviews. “I got really nervous about going for my first interview. JARC helped me work through it, and I was able to go and get my job. I was shocked!” Jim started working in November 2022 at a local machine store in Owings Mills. He is working as a CNC operator, where he is able to look at the code and the program. He mentioned that his company is helping him learn even more so he will be able to actually make changes to the program. “I’m 59 years old, and I just feel like this is a completely new way of working, so I’m in no hurry. I will do what they say and follow their direction, and I will eventually be operating on my own, independently”. When we asked him what his favorite part of being a CNC operator was, he said, “The nice thing with CNC is that there’s a right answer. This is how it’s done. This is what you do, step by step by step. There’s nothing arbitrary or ambiguous.

As a social worker, there wasn’t always a right answer, and I’m not saying that I won’t struggle with solutions as a CNC operator, but there are different types of solutions and different types of problems, more concrete and less ambiguous, I think.” He also told us that his goal is to become a valued employee and learn as much as he can. “JARC had helped me physically, but it also helped me mentally to focus, to concentrate, to discipline my attention, and to be present in the moment. I always tell people it’s not too late. We get a lot of guys who come into the shelter who are my age or maybe a little younger. But they feel like it’s too late, and then they just give up. And certainly, my head tells me that occasionally, just give up; you’re too old. But, you know, I’m still in relatively good physical health. I could still learn new things. Teach an old dog new tricks!” When we asked him what he would say to someone who was planning to come to JARC, he said, “Why not? What do you have to lose? You know, I think JARC is great. I think it’s a great program, and you can get a solid job. Why not look into it?

Olivia’s Success Story

Before joining JARC, Olivia was navigating a sea of uncertainty. After high school, she was unsure of her path and wary of committing to college due to the high costs. “I was nervous about choosing a path,” she recalls. Olivia tried out a medical program at Malcolm X College but quickly realized that the medical field wasn’t her calling.

Her turning point came when her aunt introduced her to the Chicago Women in Trades program. “One day, we had a session on welding, and I fell in love with it.” Determined to pursue welding, a recommendation from her welding instructor, who had graduated from JARC, led her to make the decision. “She spoke so highly of JARC that I felt it was the right choice for me,” Olivia remembers.

Olivia started at JARC in our Welding Program in November 2023. The program’s supportive environment made a significant impact on her. “Everyone at JARC was so friendly and passionate about what they do,” Olivia says. “It felt like they genuinely wanted me to succeed.” Her favorite aspects of the training were the hands-on experiences, particularly plasma cutting and various welding techniques. However, she faced challenges with anxiety. “I put a lot of mental pressure on myself, which made the tests stressful,” she admits. Despite the hurdles, her perseverance paid off. “When I finally passed my certification test, it was such a relief. I didn’t realize I had passed until I was handed a handshake. It was an incredible moment.”

During her time at JARC, Olivia received a range of essential support services that really made a difference.

She was given gas cards to cover her commute, steel-toed boots, and prescription safety glasses. In addition, she benefited from 15 employment coaching sessions, 3 financial coaching sessions, and 1 session of income support counseling. She also attended 8 workshops on topics like digital literacy, savings, and finances. After completing her training, Olivia landed a job at S&C Electric, working in the metal finishing department. “The job is challenging but rewarding. Starting at $24 per hour with opportunities for raises and advancement is fantastic.” Olivia enjoys her role and appreciates the company’s commitment to ongoing learning and professional growth. “S&C is a great place to work. They offer various ways to earn more and learn new skills,” she says.

Olivia didn’t stop at looking for a job; she returned to JARC for Saturday classes to continue her professional development. “I love coming back to JARC. It’s a great way to see my friends and learn new techniques like TIG welding,” she shares. Looking to the future, Olivia has clear goals. “I want to gain experience at S&C and eventually move into pipe fitting. Long-term, I hope to buy a house and retire comfortably,” she says. Her experience with JARC has been transformative. “JARC gave me a solid start in a field I’m passionate about. I have no debt and a promising career. If someone is considering JARC, I’d say go for it. It’s an incredible opportunity,” Olivia concludes.

Augustino’s Success Story

Augustino grew up in a challenging neighborhood in Chicago’s inner city. Despite his environment, he thrived academically and earned good grades as a child. After graduating from middle school, Augustino applied to and was accepted at Walter Payton College Prep, one of Chicago’s most prestigious high schools. However, the demanding workload at Walter Payton proved overwhelming, and Augustino began to lose focus and fall behind. Soon after starting, he became exhausted and ultimately dropped out of school. But his story didn’t end there. Determined to create a brighter future, Augustino completed his GED and began exploring colleges and trade schools. During this time, he learned about JARC through a family member who worked at a bridge program. He applied and was accepted into the CNC program in 2009.

”It was surprising how well I took to this trade. I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands... For individuals like that, this industry is perfect.

While a career in CNC wasn’t his first choice, Augustino quickly realized he had found his calling. “It was surprising how well I took to this trade,” he said. “I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands. I’ve spent years working on cars with my uncles and stepfather. I love figuring out how things work.” He also reminisced about his childhood curiosity, recalling how he loved to take things apart just to understand how to put them back together. “For individuals like that,” he explains, “this industry is perfect.”

Augustino credits JARC for equipping him with essential tools for the manufacturing world, including valuable soft and hard skills. Reflecting on his time at JARC, he said, “This place definitely gave me a great start in the industry.” After years of success in his field, Augustino felt compelled to give back to JARC, the place that shaped him into the professional he is today.

“I want people to know about this trade. I want to share my real-world experience,” he said. Eager to pass on his knowledge, he began discussions with JARC staff about teaching classes. He believes the industry needs talented, dedicated workers to help it thrive, stating, “This industry needs creative, outstanding individuals who can take it to the next level.” Looking ahead, Augustino plans to pursue consulting work and eventually open his own shop.

Raul’s Success Story

Raul’s story embodies the American dream. He immigrated from Colombia to United States with his parents in 2022 and became JARC Rhode Island’s first graduate. Before joining JARC, Raul faced significant financial struggles. Starting over in an unfamiliar country was already challenging, compounded by transportation issues and the lack of stable income in his household. When asked why he joined JARC, Raul simply said he wanted to “change his life.” Raul joined JARC’s Computer Numerical Control (CNC) program, and his previous experience in manufacturing and blueprints filled him with hope for a promising new career.

”I wanted to change my life

Throughout his time in the program, JARC provided employment coaching, financial coaching, and car repairs to address Raul’s transportation issues. He received certificates in OSHA 10, CMfgA, and NIMS Milling. Raul completed JARC’s program in March 2024. With the support of JARC’s Employment Coach and partners at Polaris, he landed several interviews and received more than four job offers. Shortly after graduation, he accepted a CNC machinist position at East Bay Manufacturers, where he has been employed ever since, earning $21 per hour.

When asked to summarize the JARC program in one sentence, Raul said, “JARC is a big family.” Throughout the program, his self-confidence grew significantly, and he felt that the instructors truly cared about the students. “Since I started the program, I’ve become more confident in talking to others. Now, I feel like I have more opportunities and doors opening for me. I’m unstoppable,” Raul added.

Since graduating from JARC, Raul has continued to learn new skills and is also taking TOEFL classes at Rhode Island College. His goal is to improve his English and return to college to pursue an engineering degree. With his newly acquired skills and confidence, Raul is achieving his dreams every single day. Raul advises anyone considering the program to “do some research about manufacturing, be open to talking to everyone—both classmates and instructors. You can learn from anyone.”

Valerie Success Story

Valerie came to JARC shortly after being released from prison. At the time that she enrolled in JARC, she was recovering from substance abuse and had no stable housing. As a mother of three, she knew that she had to make a change. Valerie faced numerous barriers to employment, including previous justice involvement, housing insecurity, single parenthood, and substance abuse. Many of our clients face these challenges and more.

Once Valerie started JARC’s program, she gained essential life skills, honed budgeting abilities, and acquired valuable computer skills. Furthermore, she obtained numerous metalworking certifications. These achievements have not only bolstered Valerie’s confidence but have also provided her with a solid foundation to excel in her Welding Career.

Now things are different. JARC disrupts the cycle of intergenerational poverty by providing parents with the opportunity to learn new skills and earn a livable wage that leads to financial self-sufficiency. Valerie is now working as a welder and has been at Freedman Seating Company for over 10 years! Now, she is a grandmother and has over 10 years of sobriety. She is making enough money to not only support herself but also her family.

Tonce’ Success Story

Before discovering JARC, Tonce’ faced significant challenges. Her past created barriers that made finding stable, traditional employment difficult. She knew that she needed to find a new direction, one that would accommodate her background and provide her with a fresh start. This realization led her to explore the trades, a field where she believed she could build a promising future.

Tonce’s turning point came when, back in 2015, she attended an orientation at JARC. “Patricia made me feel so authentic and genuine in wanting to help someone with a background like mine. She said, ‘No matter where you come from or what you’ve done in the past, come to us, and we will make sure that we take care of you.'” Inspired by this message, Tonce embarked on her journey with JARC.

”JARC was definitely my springboard that catapulted me to where I am now.

Enrolling in JARC’s welding program, Tonce’ committed herself to reinventing her life. JARC’s comprehensive support was instrumental in her transformation. “I needed help with those soft skills, you know, because I was a little rough around the edges. JARC worked with me all the way through the financial coaching, the soft skills classes on Fridays, and the hands-on training with welding.” This holistic approach not only taught her a valuable trade but also prepared her to navigate and sustain a professional career. While in the program, Tonce’ received 37 financial coaching sessions, 6 employment coaching sessions, and 23 income support counseling sessions. She also attended nine workshops about financial literacy and job readiness.

Enrolling in JARC’s welding program, Tonce’ committed herself to reinventing her life.

After completing the program, Tonce’ secured a job at Freedman Seating as a robotic welder. She was quickly promoted to shift lead and received an Individual Achievement Award from the Workplace Innovation and Opportunity Act Program. Despite her success in the welding industry, Tonce’ realized that her true calling lay elsewhere. She was able to leverage the soft skills and financial stability she had gained to smoothly transition into a new career in retail at Dollar Tree and later into housekeeping at Indiana Wesleyan University. Reflecting on her journey, Tonce’ emphasized the profound impact of JARC. “JARC was definitely my springboard that catapulted me to where I am now.” With the foundation she built at JARC, Tonce’ continued to grow, eventually starting her own business, Restored and Delivered Cleaning Company LLC. She attributes her resilience and adaptability to the skills and confidence she gained through JARC’s program. Tonce’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the transformative potential of supportive educational programs,

like JARC’s Careers in Manufacturing Programs. “If you’re ready to do the work and utilize your resources, JARC is the place to be.” Her journey from overcoming a difficult past to becoming a successful entrepreneur and valued employee demonstrates the life-changing impact that a dedicated support system can provide. Today, Tonce’ is thriving, both professionally and personally. She is now 54, and she is working on her savings to ensure a comfortable retirement.  She cherishes the time she spends with her grandchildren. Her story is a beacon of hope and inspiration for anyone facing similar struggles, proving that with the right support and determination, it is possible to turn one’s life around completely. “No one can do the hard work for anyone. This is something that you have to do yourself, but JARC gives you the chance to make it happen.”

Supporting Moms & Families in Manufacturing

In an era where the manufacturing sector struggles to find skilled candidates for open positions, women remain a largely untapped resource. Numerous obstacles, such as lack of affordable childcare, insufficient skills, and negative perceptions of manufacturing, continue to keep women, especially mothers, away from the shop floor. One significant barrier, in particular, is the lack of access to childcare, which has long hindered employment opportunities for moms seeking a career in manufacturing.

Tonce’s turning point came when, back in 2015, she attended an orientation at JARC. “Patricia made me feel so authentic and genuine in wanting to help someone with a background like mine. She said, ‘No matter where you come from or what you’ve done in the past, come to us, and we will make sure that we take care of you.'” Inspired by this message, Tonce embarked on her journey with JARC.

To address this issue, JARC employs a “two-generation” approach to its programs, catering to the needs of both parents and their children. For many vulnerable moms, the lack of access to childcare prevents them from enrolling in job training programs like those offered at JARC, thus hindering their career prospects. This issue not only affects the mothers but also impacts their children, who are more likely to remain in poverty and fail to meet key developmental milestones if their mothers cannot make ends meet. By partnering with childcare and education providers, JARC helps remove the persistent childcare barrier, opening doors for unemployed mothers and their children to achieve self-sufficiency.

At JARC, we are committed to helping mothers and their families succeed.

Take Erika, for example, a mother of three who worked part-time while attending JARC’s CNC Fast Track Program. She is now employed full-time as a Machine Operator at a large manufacturer in the western suburbs. Similarly, Yvette, a mother of one, was stuck in a low-skilled manufacturing job and turned to JARC to enhance her skills. She now works full-time, earning nearly $17 an hour, and cherishes her afternoons and evenings with her daughter.
