What is the Jane Addams Resource Corporation about?

JARC is a nonprofit organization recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) that provides Career in Manufacturing Programs (CMP) and support services to unemployed and underemployed adults. CMP offers training tracks in Computer Numerical Control (CNC), welding, mechanical assembly, the fundamentals of manufacturing, and more. Through our CMP program, we prepare jobseekers with in-demand technical skills and soft skills so they can have successful careers that provide financial stability for themselves, their families, and their communities. We approach our training programs through a two-generational lens, with a focus on families. We ensure that people who work do not live in poverty

JARC also provides economic and workforce development to businesses to improve their competitiveness. JARC helps jobseekers gain skills for entry-level positions in manufacturing, and we also assist companies in hiring and training incumbent workers.

How can I enroll in a program?

The first step to entering JARC’s program is attending one of our application sessions. (Registration required)

    • Chicago: We host application sessions every Wednesday at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. In-person sessions are on the first Wednesday of each month, and virtual sessions are on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Wednesdays of the month. Sign up here for the upcoming application session.
    • Baltimore: We host application sessions every other Wednesday. Sessions will take place at 9:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on the announced dates. Sign up here for the upcoming application session.
    • Providence: We host in-person Application Sessions for Careers in Manufacturing Programs every Monday and Wednesday at 10 a.m. Sign up here for the upcoming application session.

How much does the program cost?

JARC’s Careers in Manufacturing Program is completely FREE to participants. This is made possible through funding from various sources, including government grants, private donations, and partnerships with businesses.

Business and Workforce Services (BWS) classes for employer partners can vary depending on several factors. Please contact us for more information. 

Are there any eligibility requirements for the Careers in Manufacturing Programs?

  • 18 years of age or older
  • 9th grade math and reading
  • No sexual offenses
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.

Do I need to have a High School Diploma?

You do not need to provide any diploma or GED certificate to be accepted into our programs. You need to take a *CASAS assessment (math and reading) after you apply to determine your level of math and reading literacy.

Does JARC offer job placement assistance?

Yes, the Jane Addams Resource Corporation (JARC) offers job placement assistance upon the successful completion of our Career in Manufacturing Program.

When does the class start?

We do not have formal start dates and end dates. Rather, we operate on an “Open Entry/Open Exit” model, which means that you would start the program as soon as you are approved for funding, and you would exit either when you found a job or when you completed the program. Completion of the program would include earning your certifications.

Are programs available only in English?

Yes, the Careers in Manufacturing Program Training at JARC is currently available in English. However, in Chicago, we offer our “Ensamblaje Industrial” Program in Spanish.

Can I qualify if I have a criminal background?

JARC is committed to providing equal opportunities for all individuals, including those with records of arrest and conviction. However, we are unable to provide training to individuals who have committed sexual offenses.

Will I get paid for attending JARC’s program?

In Baltimore and Providence, participants typically do not receive payment for attending JARC’s programs. However, in our Chicago location, trainees receive a stipend of $200/month. Our programs are tailored to offer free training, skills development, and comprehensive support services aimed at preparing individuals for employment in the manufacturing industry. These services include transportation assistance, public benefit screening, financial coaching, and access to emergency funds. We also facilitate connections to resources for food, childcare, and housing.

Is there an age limit for participating in JARC's programs?

There is no age limit for our programs, but you must be at least 18 years old.

I’m currently working; do I qualify for the programs?

Yes, you may still qualify for our programs even if you are currently employed. Currently, our classes are only offered during the day. If you can manage the schedule for the time you are here, working during the training is a great way to keep yourself financially secure while working on a new career.

If I have a disability, will I be able to enter JARC’s programs?

We can discuss your disability during the interview process. JARC is happy to provide any reasonable accommodation to help folks succeed in the program.

How can I become a volunteer?

What volunteer opportunities are available?

a. ALPS TUTOR (Chicago only): If you enjoy reading and helping others, we’ welcome you to ! Train to become a volunteer tutor in reading or math! Contact Jeremy M. Cowart at jeremymc@jane-addams.org for more information.

b. FINANCE/OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT INTERN/VOLUNTEER: Assist with filing, recordkeeping, processing check requests, and providing clerical support with email and correspondence. Contact Yewande Peters at yewandep@jane-addams.org for more information.

c. MARKETING INTERN: As a marketing intern, you will dive into the exciting realm of marketing, gaining hands-on experience in various aspects of the field.
